Ryan Donn

Rave reviews are already rolling in for This Life, the sophomore CD byaward winning Canadian troubadour Ryan Donn.  Following on the heals of his critically acclaimed album Causewayend, This life was written over the past three years. This new material blends the pride in his Scottish heritage and his infectious passion for life. This combination has led to a wonderfully inspired CD that brilliantly reflects his heritage and roots, utilizing smatterings of his native tongue, Doric - a unique dialect spoken in North East Scotland - as well as two fabulously crafted love songs and several social commentary songs built around his strong rhythmic acoustic guitar playing, melodic vocals, and pop/folk inclinations.

Donn’s song In This life has just been selected for the 2008 Music B.C. compilation CD, while There For You is the first single released off the new CD and is receiving rave reviews through media and is being played daily in rotation on SILK FM, KISS FM and 15 other stations across B.C.  This Life is a superb encore CD to Ryan’s inaugural 2005 album, Causewayend. Causewayend, in its masterful lyrics and appeal, provided many opportunities for Donn including performing with 54-40, a tour of Japan and Expo 2005, and winning Male Performer of the Year 2005 at the Okanagan Music Awards.

Donn has written theme songs for the B.C. Disability Games and the Terry Fox Run, which became integral pieces to each event, being performed at both opening and closings.
Justen Gordon

From the beginning Justen had a natural ability to listen then play what he heard. By fourteen he was touring with a gospel band and played at conferences with over 2500 people in attendance. He cut his first CD that same year and has been in the studio on 15 projects for a variety of artists including three from his own punk rock band Kiros. Justen has been toted as a prodigy from the time he started and has now toured through out North America on many tours including Drive-Thru Records Canadian Invasion tour in 2004 and the Vans Warp Tour in 2004 and 2005 touring with bands such as The offspring, Good Charlotte, and Fallout Boy as well as many others. Justen graduated with a Masters in Percussionary Arts from The University of Berkeley at age 22 and mentored under drumming great Eric Boseman.

He has made appearances on Much Music, 123 Punk, and MTV Canada in both music videos and personal interviews. Currently he has just finished with Kiros and is sought after by artists to do session and studio work for them. He also provides percussion workshops for school band programs. Justen is endorsed by Orange County Drums and Percussion and Wells Custom Drums. Justen gives back to the community as he is also sought after as a motivation speaker having spoken to Jr. High assemblies and young offenders through the Cops for Kids Program encouraging young people to pursue their dreams and avoid anything that would hinder fulfilling them.

The Contest is open to anyone ages 12 and up. Each contestant will perform 1 original song that should be what they feel is the BEST song they have written. This song will be performed live in front of our judges and one artist per night will advance to the finals.

Registration forms can be picked up at the venue each night or downloaded 'here'.  To enter you must fill out a registration form and pay a $20 registration fee. Forms and fees may be submitted to jenniferboal@hotmail.com or okanaganmusicgroup@gmail.com or given to Jennifer Boal at the venue on the night of the auditions.

Online Submissions

Can't make an audition night? Submit your audition online by sending us your 'registration form', a $25 fee, and a link to your YouTube video audition. The video should be clearly visible, audible and be no more or less than the performance you would give live on stage. Make sure to introduce yourself, your song, and state that this is your audition video for the Okanagan Music Group Singer-Songwriter Competition 2017.

General Rules

Songs must be original content, and under 4 minutes in length. 0.5 points will be deducted for each 10 seconds over time, with disqualification at 4 minutes 30 seconds.

Each performer gets 1 song unless there is more time. If we get through all contestants, the night will resume in an Open Mic fashion.

Participants can enter as a solo, duo or trio act, but drums are not permitted. Percussion is acceptable and artists must be older than 12 to enter.

Registration is limited for live events. Pre-registration is recommended and will allow you to pick what night you want to perform.

A $20 registration fee to perform live, or a $25 registration fee for online submissions, must be submitted with your registration form to be accepted.

Finals Overview

One artist per night will advance to the finals, with 4 remaining wildcard slots to be selected from online submissions and the remaining live performers.

Ten artists will perform two songs at the finals. The first should be the song they auditioned with (and the best in their repertoire) and the second song should be the artists next favorite original. The idea is to show the judges as much as you can about yourself as a writer and an artist with these two songs.

At the end of the night, at least three artists will walk away with prize packages chosen by the judge's panel. Artists will be judged based on their live performance in the areas of Confidence/Stage Manner, Musicality and Ability, Songwriting/Composition and Originality.
Finals April 22, 2017 at the Creekside Community Theatre in Lake Country, featuring performances by our Hosts/Judges and the winner of last year's competition, Michael Painchaud!
